Derek Trucks Appears On Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast

By Andy Kahn Dec 22, 2016 7:08 am PST

Guitarist Derek Trucks was the subject of the latest edition of the WTF Podcast. The co-leader of the Tedeschi Trucks Band spoke with host Marc Maron about many aspects of his career that began as a child prodigy.

Smoking a Cuban cigar, Maron discussed Trucks’ early days in Jacksonville, Florida hanging around his dad and his brother, Derek’s uncle and The Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks. Derek talks about falling asleep to The Allman Brothers Band, learning “Les Brers In A Minor,” meeting Joe Bonamassa as a teen and how Col. Bruce Hampton became a huge influence and mentor.

The interview also touches on Derek’s love of the blues, meeting John Lee Hooker, performing with B.B. King, touring with Eric Clapton, recording with Junior Wells and how he merged that sound with Indian music after Hampton hipped him to master sarod player Ali Akbar Khan. Trucks also tells the story of meeting and recording with Levon Helm, Rick Danko and other members of The Band. Maron gets Derek to open up about joining The Allman Brothers, his relationship with Gregg Allman (who gave him one of Duane Allman’s old guitar slides) and further explains the circumstances surrounding Gregg’s notorious “who’s the fucking Phish fan?” comment.
