A Wednesday tradition continued last night at John & Peter’s in New Hope, where Dean Ween hosted the latest installment of his The Invitational Jam. Deaner teamed with a number of his longtime musical collaborators and musicians who signed up to jam as part of the evening, which spanned from just before 9 p.m. to just after 1 a.m.

The action started with a set featuring Deaner, Bill Fowler, Keith Kenny, Mike Hampton (Parliament-Funkadelic), Eli Ward, John D’Angelo and Glenn McClelland (Ween). The guys were led by Matt Setzer for covers of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy” and “I Wanna Be Your Lover” as well as Matt and Deaner’s “Sexy Sexy.” Ray Kubian then joined in on The Cars’ “Good Times Roll” in honor of news of the New Wave icons making the Rock Hall’s Class Of 2018. Ween sat out a version of Bob Dylan’s “The Man In Me” but returned for his own “When You Bomb.”

Deaner, Fowler, Hampton, Kubian, vocalist Guy Heller and Ween bassist Dave Dreiwitz formed the core band for the second portion of last night’s concert. The musicians performed David Bowie’s “Width Of A Circle” and The Dean Ween Group’s “I’m Gonna Get High” as well as “Transdermal Celebration” with Glenn McClelland. Ween wasn’t on stage for the third set of the evening which featured “All Along The Watchtower” and more.

The fourth set saw Ween band mates Deaner, Glenn McClelland and Dave Dreiwitz aided by Fowler, Heller, drummer Chuck Treese and guitarist Jonah Lloyd on Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.” Heller was also on hand for “Crystal Ship” by The Doors, while a version of Dean Ween’s “On Christmas Day” featured a taste of “Mister Richard Smoker.” The core band also performed a Frank Sinatra tune and some Creedence Clearwater Revival. Deaner took a break, while the assembled musicians covered songs such as Blink 182’s “All The Small Things.”

Wednesday’s sixth segment saw a group featuring Dreiwitz, Fowler and more cover the Dead’s “Mr. Charlie” and “The Shape I’m In” by The Band before Deaner came out to help sing “Highway Star.” The seventh set was a jam session and the eighth set contained a wild rendition of Frank Zappa’s “Black Napkins” performed by Fowler, Ward, Treese and Hampton. For the finale, Deaner and his Ween mates as well as Fowler and Kubian on The Dean Ween Group’s “Sunset Over Belmar,” “The Ritz Carlton” and “Exercise Man.” Michael Hampton contributed to the final two numbers of the night.
