Dead & Company’s sixth weekend of their Dead Forever residency at the Las Vegas Sphere got underway on Thursday night with the 16th show of the run. Attendees were treated to a trio of Sphere debuts in the first set, including the band’s first performance of “Greatest Story Ever Told” since their show on July 13, 2018.

Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir and drummer Mickey Hart with guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummer Jay Lane busted out “Greatest Story Ever Told” as the penultimate song of the seven-song first set. Thursday’s performance was the first in 138 shows and was just the eighth time Dead & Company played the song written by Weir, Hart and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.

“Greatest Story Ever Told” was preceded by one of the other Sphere first-timers as the classic Dead sing-along “Dire Wolf” made its first setlist of the year.

The concert began with the other Sphere debut of the night, “Man Smart (Woman Smarter).” Coincidentally or intentionally, the choice to open the show with the lyrically pointed calypso cover followed accusations of alleged misconduct against women that surfaced online this week against Shakedown vendors.

Across the country, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead coincidentally opened their concert last night in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire with “Man Smart (Woman Smarter)” – one of several songs to make both bands’ setlists Thursday, including three overlapping first set choices.

Thursday’s first set also saw “Playing In The Band” come after the “Man Smart, Women Smarter” opener, followed by “They Love Each Other” and “Tennessee Jed.” The opening set closed with Mayer leading a sublime “Sugaree.”

While Dead & Company has split up regularly paired songs frequently during Dead Forever residency, Thursday’s second set opened with the typically matched “China Cat Sunflower” segueing into “I Know You Rider.” Next came setlist staples “He’s Gone” and “The Other One,” the latter featuring some of the nights deepest jamming.

“The Other One” gave way to “Drums” and the pulsating rhythms conjured by team of rhythm makers. Hart punctuated the jam driving the drone of The Beam into “Space.” The post-“Drums/Space” section of the second set rolled forward with “The Wheel.”

One of the songs that’s found unexpected setlist placement at the Sphere is “Franklin’s Tower,” which sprung out of “The Wheel.” Sphere staple “U.S. Blues” teed up the potent “Throwing Stones” that led to the playing of the 1960s news report on the Grateful Dead playing over the PA. Thursday’s final song was “Turn On Your Lovelight” making its second Sphere appearance.
