Dead & Company Complete Tour In Las Vegas

After 18 shows the first Dead & Company tour has come to a close. Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann along with John Mayer, Jeff Chimenti and Oteil Burbridge have been impressing at stops across the country over the course of a tour that concluded with two high- profile performances at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday.

Dead & Company dreamed up fantasy setlists that still honored the traditions of the Dead by working the more country and folk side of the catalog within first sets punctuated by the occasional “jam” song and stretching out on more psychedelic material in the second sets. Vegas featured a pair of dream setlists that saw “Dark Star,” “Playin'” and “St. Stephen” all played to the hilt before “Drums” started on Friday night, while Saturday’s pre-“Drums” segment contained both “Help”/”Slip”/”Franklin’s” and “Scarlet”/”Fire.” Saturday’s tour finale came to a close with Hart calling out every member of the Dead & Company crew for a rousing ovation following a gorgeous “Brokedown Palace” encore.

John Mayer has won many new fans since the end of October and seemed to grow in comfort each night out. Weir’s longest layoff from the road of his career did him well as he was in fine voice throughout the run. Oteil Burbridge’s immense talents were displayed on a nightly basis and he helped propel some of the tour’s finest moments. Jeff Chimenti showed off his versatility and shined on most opportunities he was given. The Rhythm Devils provided a strong backbone for the music and provided the tour’s wildest and most free-form moments each night during “Drums” and “Space.”

Dead & Company returns on December 27 for the first of two shows at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Then, D&C end the year at L.A.’s Forum on December 30 and 31. Band members have hinted there’s more in store for the band in 2016 and here’s hoping that will be the case.
