De Lorians: De Lorians
https://deloriansbbib.bandcamp.com/album/de-loriansHave you gone on a summer vacation yet? If yes, hope you brought some RecommNeds with you to listen to at the beach. If not, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with another one of our trips around the world new-music style. Pack your bags, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover! We’ll head west first to the east, Japan to be specific, with the latest offering from our friends at Beyond Beyond is Beyond. Man, those guys know how to find them and the just-out self-titled banger from Tokyo, De Lorians is yet another winner. These guys capture the awesome grandiose energy and chaotic weirdness of Frank Zappa’s jazzier instrumental stuff perfectly, somehow both a loving tribute and groundbreaking all the same. Highly recommended.

Pipe-Eye: Inside/Outside
Moving along to more places and sounds far-flung, we head to Australia. Pipe-Eye is a “side project” of Cook Craig’s who plays guitar with both King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and the Murlocs. His newest album, Inside/Outside is recently out on the KGLW label Flightless. The sound here is a wonderfully twisted psychedelic, a little bizarre, a little groovy, a little candy-pop, a whole lot of yes, more please! Three-minute songs that find their spot and get the job done, there’s little not to love about this one. Check it out!

Rejoicer: Heavy Smoke
A long flight takes us from Tokyo to Tel Aviv where we find musician Yuvi Havkin who produces music under the name Rejoicer. Time to get our headgroove on with Heavy Smoke, his sweet new EP out this past spring. These somewhat deceptively laid-back six tracks mix electronic ambiance with funky beats and jetlagged synthesizer, flashes of jazz meeting jazz for some rather delicious morsels. This one is short and sweet, but perfect for leaving on repeat for whatever your day brings to you. Get into it.

Altin Gün: Gece
OK, I know we’ve covered a lot of ground already, but I want to make sure you’re good and ready for this next one, so take a minute if you need it. We’ve landed in Amsterdam, but you’ll be forgiven if the next pick makes you feel like we’re actually in Turkey. The band is Altın Gün and their sophomore release out a few months back is Gece and it’s maybe my favorite new discovery of 2019. Exotic funk with a psychedelic, downright jammy spirit, Gece will put a boogie in your bottom and a smile on your face. Uber Eurojam. Seriously folks, this is the good shit, if this one hasn’t blipped onto your radar screen yet, please just go listen to Gece posthaste and thank me later.
Oruã: Romã
From Amsterdam to Rio de Janeiro, from umlauts to tildes, from sick Turk grooves to expansive freeform. My next you-must-listen of the voyage is Romã the newest release from Rio’s Oruã. I wouldn’t drag you halfway around the world and back if it weren’t for gems like this. Combining dirty afrobeat, timid-beware psychedelia and achieve-lift-off spacekraut, Romã hits a bunch of sweet spots and then some. I think you’ll dig. And I think that was enough passport-stamping for one excursion, time to head home and listen to our new discoveries. Enjoy!
