‘Day Of The Dead’ Grateful Dead Source Material Spotify Playlist
By Andy Kahn May 21, 2016 • 1:00 pm PDT

Yesterday, 4AD released the massive 59-track Day Of The Dead box set compilation tribute to the Grateful Dead in support of the Red Hot Organization charity. The nearly five and half hour collection of artists covering songs from the Dead’s wide-ranging repertoire curated by The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner features an incredibly impressive array of participants from many divergent music scenes, often not associated with the iconic rock band.
A Spotify Playlist created by 4AD of the source material of era-specific Grateful Dead recordings is the focus of this week’s edition of Saturday Stream. All but four of the 56 tracks in the set are culled from live shows the Dead played during their 30 year career. The playlist is presented to match with the tracklist of the official Day Of The Dead digital release and clocks in at a whopping seven hours and 50 minutes.
Such selections include “Candyman” from November 5, 1977 (covered by Jim James & Friends), “Black Muddy River” from April 3, 1989 (covered by Bruce Hornsby & DeYarmond Edison), “Althea” from March 15, 1990 (used by Bryce Dessner for “Garcia Counterpoint”), “Help On The Way” from March 30, 1990 (covered by Bela Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Edgar Meyer, Oliver Wood and Abigail Washburn), “Cumberland Blues” from April 8, 1972 (covered by Charles Bradley & Menahan Street Band), “St. Stephen” from February 27, 1969 (covered by Wilco with Bob Weir) and “Dark Star” from November 8, 1969 (covered by Cass McCombs, Joe Russo & Friends) among many others.
