Today, on the fifth anniversary of the song’s release, David Byrne put his own spin on Olivia Rodrigo's “drivers license.” The newly shared version is the first in a series of covers set to drop in celebration of the fifth anniversary of SOUR, Rodrigo’s debut album.
Rodrigo, who was just 17 at the time, became the youngest artist in history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “drivers license,” a feat that has yet to be equaled or topped to this day. David Byrne’s cover is one of several special versions of “drivers license” out today via Geffen Records.
A new 7″ vinyl, pressed on translucent ruby vinyl, includes Byrne’s version of “drivers license” on Side A and the Talking Heads icon’s performance of “Burning Down The House” with Olivia Rodrigo at the 2025 Governors Ball music festival on Side B.
Also available for pre-order is the Target Exclusive Tiny Vinyl of the single. Pressed on fruit punch color vinyl, the release features Rodrigo’s original album version of “drivers license” on Side A backed by her live performance of the song from Governors Ball 2025.
David Byrne shared the single along with some thoughts on the cover, writing:
My new friend Olivia invited me to interpret her 1st single to be paired with a release of our live cover of Burning Down The House. I discovered that her song resonates (I changed a few words!) and is universal – we all have those feelings and have had that experience… I recorded this while on tour in Atlanta and Miami with the incredible musicians, singers and dancers who are with me. We all had a great time!
