Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of Dave Matthews Band‘s first live performance. The band – which at the time found Dave Matthews performing with Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Leroi Moore – kicked off what would turn into a legendary career at Trax in Charlottesville, Virginia on March 14, 1991. To celebrate the occasion, DMB shared audio from their historic debut.

Take a listen to “Recently” from the first-ever Dave Matthews Band gig:

A few years ago, Lessard found a cassette tape with a recording of the band’s debut in his archives. DMB’s March 14th, 1991 performance at Trax was part of a benefit concert for Middle East Children’s Alliance. The Dave, Carter, Stefan and Leroi lineup would remain intact through August of 1991. Keyboardist Peter Griesar soon joined as did fiddle player Boyd Tinsley, though Grieser left the band in March of 1993. Other songs performed by DMB at their debut included “Typical Situation,” “The Best Of What’s Around,” “I’ll Back You Up,” “The Song That Jane Likes,” “Warehouse” and “Cry Freedom.”

Dave Matthews Band will kick off this year’s Summer Tour at InTrust Bank Arena in Wichita on May 11. The group is expected to take a hiatus following the lengthy tour.
