Dave Matthews Band Classic Gets A Derek Trucks Facelift At Bourbon & Beyond

Dave Matthews Band headlined the action on Friday at the 2024 Bourbon & Beyond in Louisville. Guitarist Derek Trucks sat in with DMB on fan favorite “Lie In Our Graves” late in their set.

Derek Trucks was on hand for Tedeschi Trucks Band‘s Friday afternoon set at the festival held at Kentucky Fair & Expo Center. The longtime The Allman Brothers Band axeman made his third Dave Matthews Band guest appearance in as many years. Trucks first joined DMB in his hometown of Jacksonville on June 7, 2022 and then was among Dave Matthews Band's guests at Madison Square Garden on November 17, 2023.

Originally released by DMB on their sophomore studio album, Crash, in 1996, “Lie In Our Graves” has often been used by the group to showcase guest guitarists including Trey Anastasio, Stanley Jordan, Eric Krasno, David Hildalgo and Louis Kato. Derek Trucks shredded through the song during both of his previous DMB sit-ins.

The collaborative “Lie In Our Graves” came late in Dave Matthews Band’s 16-song set at Bourbon & Beyond. The septet reeled off one beloved staple after another including “Ants Marching,” “What Would You Say,” “Crash Into Me,” “Warehouse,” and “The Space Between” in Louisville. DMB also pulled “Madman’s Eyes” and “Monsters” from their latest studio album, 2023’s Walk Around The Moon, and fit in covers of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” and Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.”

Derek Trucks delivered an extended solo on “Lie In Our Graves.” The guitarist then engaged DMB saxophonist Jeff Coffin in a memorable call-and-response segment.
