Dave Matthews Band Keeps Tour Debuts Coming In Chicago
"Ants Marching," "Crush" and "Lie In Our Graves" were among the songs played for the first time in 2021 this weekend.
Dave Matthews Band resumed their 2021 tour this weekend with a pair of concerts in Chicago at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. The septet included a total of seven tour debuts within the setlists on Friday and Saturday in the Windy City.
Friday’s show came as storms descended upon the venue, leading the band to go without an encore. DMB opened the run with “One Sweet World” and then presented their familiar “So Much To Say” into “Anyone Seen The Bridge” into “Too Much” sequence. The weekend’s first tour debuts followed with “Big Eyed Fish” and “Bartender.” Both songs were originally released by the group on 2002’s Busted Stuff.
Dave Matthews Band went on to treat Chicago fans to “Can’t Stop,” the evening’s lone song from their most recent studio album, 2018’s Come Tomorrow before a run of “So Damn Lucky,” “The Ocean & The Butterfly,” “When The World Ends” and “What Would You Say.” Matthews then led his mates through the tour’s first takes on beloved favorites “Proudest Monkey” and “Lie In Our Graves.” Next, “Stay Or Leave” and “Squirm” were followed by a brief, aborted “Everyday” and a “Grey Street” closer.
“Granny” got the call to kick off Saturday’s concert. The 21-song performance included four tunes a piece from both Under The Table & Dreaming and Before These Crowded Streets. Dave Matthews Band followed the pairing of “Funny The Way It Is” and “Warehouse” with their first “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” of 2021. “Crush” saw action for its initial play of the year next. A highlight of the night came later when DMB worked “Jimi Thing” into jams on Huey Lewis & The News’ “I Want A New Drug” and “Sexy M.F.” by Prince.
A full “Everyday” followed the wild “Jimi Thing” sequence before “#41.” Matthews and his band capped the set with “Don’t Drink The Water” into “Corn Bread” into “Ants Marching.” The latter was the weekend’s final tour debut. Dave emerged solo to start Saturday’s encore with “Singing From The Windows.” The rest of the band then returned for the “Pantala Naga Pampa” into “Rapunzel” finale.
Dave Matthews Band next takes the stage on Wednesday at DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan. Watch fan-shot video from the Chicago shows below:
