Dave Matthews Band frontman Dave Matthews began last night’s encore by dedicating a solo performance of “Some Devil” to the memory of those who died at the Astroworld Festival on Friday night. Matthews took a few moments at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut before he played what he described as a “love song” to address the crowd and horrific “mass casualty event” at Houston’s NRG Park in which eight people died.

“I know everybody’s hurt and I can tell [the] things that happened at the Astroworld Festival … I know it’s just a terrible thing, but that’s what we all do,” the 54-year old musician said after thanking the audience for raising his spirits. “We play music, we get in crowds together, we hope that things turn out okay. Anyway, I just felt like I should say something just [so] we could all think of how terrible it is to have your heart broken as badly as that when you lose people you love.”

He then gave his love to family members and friends of those who died at Astroworld. “There’s probably going to be a lot of ugliness that comes out of it, but if we could just try to remember about all the people that helped and [tried] to save all the people, [those] that tried to do their best to help the situation … so we have some hope,” Matthews added.

“This is a love song and I thought I’d play this love song for all the people that struggled there and lost their lives,” Matthews concluded before performing the title track from his 2003 solo studio album. “Some Devil” followed an 18-song main set heavy on such staples as “The Best Of What’s Around,” “Can’t Stop,” “Jimi Thing,” “Grey Street” and “Everyday.” The rest of the band returned to augment Matthews on the “Warehouse” finale. DMB returns to Mohegan Sun Arena tonight.
