Dark Star Orchestra Recreates Grateful Dead Europe ‘72 Lille Show At Capitol Theatre
The performance coincided with the 50th anniversary of the original free concert.
Dark Star Orchestra recreated the Grateful Dead’s Europe ‘72 show in Lille, France on Friday night at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. DSO’s selection of the May 13, 1972, Dead show coincided with the 50th anniversary of the original concert.
In addition to recreating the setlist from the two-set Lille show, Dark Star Orchestra guitarist Jeff Mattson played Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia’s “Alligator” guitar. The 1957 Fender Stratocaster was given to Garcia by Graham Nash and used during the Europe ‘72 Tour (prior to being adorned with its namesake alligator sticker).
Dark Star Orchestra recently similarly recreated the Dead’s April 8, 1972, show that coincided with the 50th anniversary of the second Europe ‘72 performance. DSO will further celebrate the Dead’s historic Europe ‘72 Tour by touring Europe themselves later this year. Revisit the Grateful Dead’s May 13, 1972, free concert in Lille, France as part of JamBase’s ongoing retrospective series examining the landmark Europe ‘72 tour.
