The Dap-Kings Perform A Tribute To Sharon Jones On ‘The Tonight Show’

As we reported earlier this week last night’s episode of the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was scheduled to honor the late Sharon Jones with a special tribute performance from her backing band The Dap-Kings to coincide with the release of Jones’ first posthumous album, Soul Of A Woman.

With an illustrated image of Jones projected behind them The Dap-Kings began their moving performance by vamping on an instrumental portion of “Sail On.” As he regularly did during their live shows, guitarist Binky Griptite stepped to the mic to give a short introduction calling Jones “the brightest star in the Dap Tones soul universe” before cutting away to a turntable as Tonight Show drummer Questlove dropped the needle on vinyl record which played the studio version of “Searching For A New Day” with a video of highlights from Jones’ career playing behind them. The prerecorded track eventually faded back to The Dap-Kings performing live as Griptite implored the studio audience to show their love for their late band mate.
