Chappell Roan was overcome by tears as she addressed the crowd during her concert on Wednesday at the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina. Roan has seen her career take off in recent months and admitted to the audience the experience wasn’t all rainbows and lollipops.

The singer-songwriter’s debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, recently hit the top of the iTunes chart thanks in part to the success of such captivating songs as “Hot to Go!,” “Red Wine Supernova” and “My Kink is Karma.” Additionally, her new single, “Good Luck Babe!,” continues to rise on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Chappell Roan has also become a huge draw with her recent sets as Boston Calling and Governor’s Ball witnessed by some of the biggest crowds of each event. Roan’s surge in popularity led Bonnaroo organizers to move her performance on Sunday from a tent to the massive Which Stage.

The Missouri-bred artist took a few moments to discuss the good and bad of the fame she’s experiencing late in her set on Wednesday. “I’m trying to figure out how to say this,” Roan started before she broke down. “I guess I just want to be honest with the crowd and I just feel a little off today because I think that my career’s just kind of gone really fast and it’s really hard to keep up. And so, I’m just being honest that I’m just having a hard time today.”

The crowd responded with chants of “Roan” and cheers of support. Chappell Roan apologized to the audience and noted she didn’t want to give the audience “a lesser show” but “there’s a lot on my mind.” Fans continued to roar back to provide Roan with strength. “Thank you for understanding. This is all I’ve ever wanted. It’s just heavy sometimes,” Roan added.

Chappell Roan performed her new song “The Subway” after the emotional speech. Watch Roan address the crowd and play “The Subway” via fan-shot video below:
