Genre-defying quintet Butcher Brown swung by the studios of Seattle independent radio station KEXP this past summer to perform a Live On KEXP set. The Richmond, Virginia-based band delivered a pair of originals and takes on songs by Ivan Lins and Wayne Shorter for their session.
Butcher Brown — saxophonist/trumpeter Marcus Tennishu, bassist Andrew Randazzo, keyboardist DJ Harrison, guitarist Morgan Burrs and drummer Corey Fonville — opened with their jazz-tinged recent single “Thirty One.” Next came the groovy “Dinorah, Dinorah,” a song written by Brazillian musician Ivan Lins. Butcher Brown’s cover was akin to a version recorded by George Benson in 1980.

The five-piece followed with the ’70s fusion-inspired “Tidal Wave” from their 2020 album, #KingButch. Butcher Brown capped the set by covering Wayne Shorter’s “Infant Eyes.”
Host Mike Ramos spoke with Butcher Brown to end the session. Ramos and Butcher Brown discussed the musical scene in Richmond, the band’s musical development, their influences and how they fuse genres.
