Bruce Springsteen Performs With Tangiers Blues Band In Asbury Park
Longtime Asbury Park, New Jersey bowling alley and concert venue Asbury Lanes held its grand reopening concert celebration Monday night with performances by the Tangiers Blues Band and Portugal. The Man. Local hero Bruce Springsteen was in attendance and performed several songs with the Tangiers Blues Band.
Springsteen began the evening by addressing the audience in the recently renovated 750 capacity room which was made up of winners of an Asbury Park residents-only ticket lottery and guests of the space’s owner iStar (which included actor Hugh Jackman). Originally opened in 1962, the historic venue which reopened in May had been closed for renovations since 2015.
Up first was the Tangiers Blues Band which features famed rock photographer Danny Clinch on harmonica and vocals. They began with bluesy covers of “Life During Wartime” by Talking Heads and “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party!)” by Beastie Boys, and then played up their pending special guest with “I’m Waiting For The Man” by The Velvet Underground.
The man known as The Boss then emerged to play guitar and sing a number of blues-rock staples. His time on stage included takes on Huey Smith’s “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” Muddy Waters’ “I Just Wanna Make Love to You,” Don Raye’s’ “Down the Road Apiece” and The Isley Brothers’ hit “Twist & Shout.”
