Bruce Springsteen has been slowly rolling out gems from his massive catalog over the course of his first tour with the E Street Band since 2017. The latest tour debut came as part of the encore last night at BOK Center in Tulsa, where The Boss led the 19-piece outfit through the trek’s first “Bobby Jean.”

“Bobby Jean” was originally released on Bruce Springsteen’s massively successful 1984 studio album, Born In The U.S.A. The song was debuted live in St. Paul, Minnesota on June 29, 1984. While “Bobby Jean” last saw action at an E Street Band show on February 25, 2017 in Christchurch, New Zealand, The Boss delivered a solo performance at the 2019 Stand Up For Heroes benefit concert in New York City.

Springsteen counted off “Bobby Jean” after launching Tuesday’s encore with classics “Thunder Road,” “Born To Run” and “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight).” The Boss was in fine voice on the emotion-laden that was purportedly written by Bruce about his relationship with guitarist Steve Van Zandt upon learning “Little Steven” would leave the E Street Band before their 1984 tour. Van Zandt returned to the fold in 1999 and has been a member of the ensemble ever since.

Saxophonist Jake Clemons was back in the mix after missing the previous two shows with COVID. Patti Scialfa did not perform in Tulsa, as Springsteen’s wife only appears at occasional concerts.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band have settled in on a structure for setlists this tour that leaves room for tour debuts on most nights. “No Surrender” opened as the song has at each show besides the Houston stop on Valentine's Day. Another change was the absence of “Glory Days” for the first time, while “Darlington County” made its second appearance of the trek.

The first Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band in six years pulls into Portland, Oregon this Saturday, February 25. Last week the tour was expanded with a second North American leg.
