Bon Iver performed a concert last night at The National in Richmond, Virginia. Frontman Justin Vernon welcomed previous collaborator Bruce Hornsby to sit-in during the performance.
Vernon was alone on stage for most of the concert, welcoming the five-piece trombone section from the Richmond-based No BS! Brass Band to join in on several songs. Hornsby emerged to play piano on a duet with Vernon on Bonnie Raitt’s ballad “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (co-written by Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin).
“This is a song that’s coming from all my Bruce listening over the decades,” Vernon told the audience prior to the start of the Hornsby-assisted “Beth/Rest.” The two had previously played the song from Bon Iver, Bon Iver at the 2016 Eaux Claires festival. Hornsby also joined Bon Iver earlier this year at Coachella.
