Bruce Hornsby‘s new album, Non-Secure Connection features a number of guests including the late Leon Russell. Leon released “Anything Can Happen” back in 1994 and Bruce used the vocals from Russell’s demo of the song for a reimagined version that appears on Non-Secure Connection, which is set for release this Friday, August 14 via Zappo Productions/Thirty Tigers.
“I was able to get Leon Russell a record deal with Virgin in 1990, and we made a record called ‘Anything Can Happen,'” explained Hornsby in a press release as per Stereogum. “I always felt that the title song wasn’t produced as well as it could have been (I’ll take the blame), and always wanted to re-cut it. Leon asked me to ‘write me a Barry White track,’ which is how the song started. His vocal from the original demo ghosts mine for a lot of the song, and then he emerges at the end to join me in harmony. My time with Leon was extremely memorable and deserves its own article; too much amazing and funny, classic stuff.”

Justin Vernon appears on the album and also added production, though Bruce Hornsby produced the bulk of the 10-track LP. James Mercer, Vernon Reid, Jamila Woods and Rob Moose are among others who contributed to Non-Secure Connection, which also features Bruce’s The Noisemakers backing band and the Orchestra Of St. Hanks.
