Brock Butler & Electric Beethoven Collaborate In Richmond

By Scott Bernstein Feb 3, 2017 9:52 am PST

On Wednesday night Reed Mathis and Electric Beethoven brought a brief run of two shows with Perpetual Groove frontman Brock Butler to a close at The Broadberry in Richmond, Virginia. While Tuesday’s show in Raleigh, North Carolina saw both acts watching and encouraging each other, Wednesday’s performance was all about musical collaboration.

Brock’s solo acoustic set saw him welcome Reed Mathis to add vocals and bass to a cover of Paul Simon’s “Under African Skies.” Then, EB drummer Jay Lane contributed to “Time To Move On” by Tom Petty before Electric Beethoven guitarist Clay Welch sat-in on Dawes’ “Moon In The Water.” Brock went from host to guest later in the night, when he came onstage midway through Electric Beethoven’s set to lead a climactic improvisation on Beethoven’s “Shepherd Song” movement from the 6th Symphony.
