Bright Eyes released a cover of Vic Chesnutt’s “Flirted With You All My Life” via Dead Oceans. The Chesnutt nod follows Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis and Nathaniel Walcott’s 2020 album, Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was.

Down in the Weeds marked Bright Eyes’ first album in nearly a decade and they now follow with Chesnutt’s “Flirted With You All My Life.” Along with Oberst, Mogis and Walcott, the track also features contributions from Macey Taylor, Jon Theodore and Andy LeMaster.

Vic Chesnutt was a highly respected songwriter out of Athens, Georgia who has collaborated with two of the town’s biggest exports in R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and Widespread Panic. Sadly, Chesnutt died in 2009. (WSP paid tribute to Vic in 2011.) Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst spoke about Chesnutt in a statement. Read his words below:

“I had the pleasure of seeing Vic perform many times over the years and from a young age. I can truly say he deeply changed my worldview and what it meant to write a really unique and thought provoking song. One of the greatest ever. Always missed. Here is our humble version of one of his best.”
