Brendan Bayliss Covers White Stripes, Modest Mouse, Bruce Springsteen & More On ‘Wine Not?’
Brendan Bayliss resumed his Wine Not? livestream series on Friday after rejoining his Umphrey’s McGee bandmates for some recent drive-in concerts. Bayliss continued his Wine Not? run of choice covers with entries from The White Stripes, Modest Mouse, Bruce Springsteen and more.
BB kicked off the stream by telling a humorous anecdote about his wife Annie Bayliss’ social media poll about the Wine Not? series. He also revealed that Annie is homeschooling the kids and dedicated the first song, the school-themed White Stripes number “We’re Going To Be Friends,” to other parents who are homeschooling. Brendan then launched into some UM material with “August,” which encompassed “Breaker” followed by the Stephen Stills-penned CSNY deep cut “4 + 20.”
Next, Bayliss delivered a song from the 30db catalog — his project with the late great Jeff Austin — with “Lick #6 which led into Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer,” a song Umphrey’s has covered in the past. Modest Mouse’s “3rd Planet” and Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” came ahead of UM’s “The Weight Around” featuring Bayliss friend and neighbor Tony (also knows as T-Bird) on the harmonica. Annie then joined in to sing the Dolly Parton classic “Jolene” with Tony teaming up with Brendan on guitar. Annie stuck around for the iconic Lefty Frizzell tune “Long Black Veil” as well as Dire Straits’ “Romero & Juliet” with Tony returning on harmonica.
