Courtney Barnett Joins Brandi Carlile At The Ryman
By Scott Bernstein Jan 21, 2020 • 7:03 am PST
Courtney Barnett made a guest appearance with Brandi Carlile at the latter’s Monday night concert at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Last night’s show was the fifth of Carlile’s six-night residency at the famed venue.
Barnett, fresh off an appearance at Wilco Sky Blue Sky in Mexico, emerged for “Everything Is Free” towards the end of Carlile’s main set. “Everything Is Free” is a Gillian Welch song Courtney previously performed for The Tonight Show’s “Cover Room” video series.
Last night’s encore began with Carlile and twins Phil & Tim Hanseroth performing “Beginning To Feel The Years” acoustic from The Ryman’s balcony. Next, Brandi and her band covered the Fleetwood Mac classic “The Chain.” While Carlile has tackled “The Chain” recently as part of her time with supergroup The Highwomen, Monday marked the first time since November 5, 2016 she played the tune at one of her own shows. A pairing of “Mainstream Kid” and “Party Of One” brought the penultimate show of the residency to a close.
