U2 frontman Bono made his The Late Show With Stephen Colbert debut on Thursday’s episode. The singer was on hand to promote his new memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, and delivered a unique take on the U2 hit “With Or Without You” in addition to sitting for an extensive interview.
The first of three interview segments with Bono saw the vocalist recall linking up with bandmates Adam Clayton, Larry Mullen Jr. and The Edge while in high school on the same week he met he future wife. Bono then spoke about the importance of improvisation to U2’s music and the band’s songwriting process. He shared a story of how U2 played a bigtime television producer The Ramones’ “Glad To See You Go” and told him the song was an original. “That’s improvisation, too” Bono quipped of one of the band’s big breaks.
Bono went on to detail his thoughts on America and what the future holds for the country. He has a huge appreciation for the U.S. and even as “the bleeding heart liberal that I am,” enjoys his conversations with conservatives.
The episode ended with Bono’s special take on The Joshua Tree cut “With Or Without You.” The Irish singer offered a spoken word introduction before launching into the song proper. Watch his performance and interview clips from last night’s Colbert below:
