Supergroup Bonny Light Horseman have unveiled their debut single. The band consisting of Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown), Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats) and Josh Kaufman (Bob Weir, Craig Finn, Josh Ritter) recorded a cover of the folk ballad that gave the new group its name.
Mitchell, Johnson and Kaufman are joined on the track “Bonny Light Horseman” by Aaron Dessner of The National on hi string guitar, JT Bates on drums and Michael Lewis on tenor sax. Bates and Lewis are also part of Bonny Light Horseman’s touring lineup.
“This is a song about a handsome soldier who may or may not ever come home,” explained the band in a statement. “And we named our band after it not just because it sounds kind of cool, but because it’s somewhat emblematic of what we’re trying to do here: sing you ancient love songs of timeless humanity and heartbreak. Songs that are gonna make you feel something no matter what century you’re in.” Bonny Light Horseman will soon announce details of their debut studio album.
