Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Vampire Weekend recently performed at campaign events for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. The rallies for the Vermont Senator were held in Iowa in advance of last night’s caucus.
Vernon’s solo set at Horizon Events Center in Clive began and ended with Bob Dylan covers, opening “With God on Our Side” and closing with “The Times They Are A-Changin’.” The set also featured a cover of Leon Russell’s “A Song For You,” alongside selections from across Bon Iver’s catalog such as “Flume,” “Towers,” “Heavenly Father,” “29 #Strafford APTS,” “Blood Bank” and “For Emma.”
Vampire Weekend appeared at Sanders’ event on Saturday at U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids. The band had previously supported Sanders during his 2016 candidacy. Their performance featured “Harmony Hall,” “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa,” “Holiday,” “Unbelievers,” “This Life,” “Sunflower,” “M79” and “Married In A Gold Rush.” There was also a crowd request “Lightning Round” part of VW’s performance that featured a portion of Thin Lizzy’s “The Boys Are Back in Town.” Watch video footage from both events below:
