Bob Weir, Bill Frisell & Greg Leisz Join Wilco At Sound Summit

Yesterday, Wilco headlined the 2016 Sound Summit music festival at the historic Mountain Theater atop Mount Tamalpais in California’s Bay Area. Those watching the band’s set at the 4000-seat stone amphitheater were treated to special guest sit-ins by previous collaborators, guitarists Bob Weir and Bill Frisell and pedal steel player Greg Leisz.

Wilco mixed up their setlist from what’s been a standard opening sequence of songs from their new album Schmilco, instead offering the festival crowd a take on “Misunderstood” to open the set. The Being There cut was followed by Schmilco tacks “If I Ever Was A Child,” “Cry All Day” and “Someone to Lose” before diving into “The Joke Explained” from last year’s Star Wars. Their main set also saw such favorites as “Ashes of American Flags,” “Forget the Flowers,” “I’m the Man Who Loves You,” “Passenger Side” and the closing “The Late Greats.”

For the encore, frontman Jeff Tweedy and the band welcomed fellow Sound Summit performer guitarists Bill Frisell and his band mate, pedal steel player Greg Leisz for “Hesitating Beauty” and “Christ For President.” The pair of songs were followed by a third selection from the Mermaid Avenue sessions with nearby-resident and Grateful Dead/Dead & Company guitarist Bob Weir emerging for a rendition of “California Stars.” The last song of the encore and the night featured all of the guests joining in on a cover of The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows” with Weir contributing additional vocals.
