Bob Dylan Plays Rarities & More During Desert Trip Set

By Andy Kahn Oct 8, 2016 12:47 pm PDT

On Friday night the first weekend of the inaugural Desert Trip music festival held at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California began with performances by The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. The evening began with Dylan offering up a set made up of many of his beloved songs being played live for the first time in years.

Recent Dylan shows have heavily relied on material from his latest two albums of classic standards covers, but his 16-song appearance at the home of Coachella instead focused mostly on originals from throughout his storied career. “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” started the show off being played for the first time since 2014 and was followed by well-know Dylan tunes “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “Highway 61 Revisited” (first since 2013) and “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” (first since 2012) as well as the Love And Theft track “High Water (For Charley Patton).”

“Simple Twist Of Fate” was trailed by “Early Roman Kings” from his 2012 album Tempest and “Love Sick” from 1997’s Time Out Of Mind. Dylan followed with his current arrangement of “Tangled Up In Blue” and from there is was a largely songs being performed by the legendary singer-songwriter for the first time in 2016, working up classics and newer songs including “Lonesome Day Blues” (first since 2014), “Make You Feel My Love” (first since 2013), “Desolation Row,” “Soon After Midnight” and “Ballad of a Thin Man.” For the encore Dylan and his band busted out “Masters Of War” for the first time live since 2010 before turning the stage over to The Rolling Stones.
