Blackberry Smoke Debuts Allman Brothers & Rolling Stones Covers In Atlanta

Blackberry Smoke wrapped up their 2019 Brothers & Sisters Holiday Homecoming concerts at the storied Tabernacle in Atlanta on Saturday night. The rockers treated the hometown crowd to a few choice covers over the weekend including tunes from The Rolling Stones, The Allman Brothers Band and more.

On Friday night, after opening with “Shake Your Magnolia” followed by a litany of originals, frontman Charlie Starr and company debuted The Allman’s “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’” from the legendary band’s 1970 album Idlewild South about halfway through the set. After “Too High” and “Ain’t Got The Blues,” BBS paid tribute to fellow Atlanta southern rockers The Georgia Satellites with “Battleship Chains.” After closing out the set with “Like An Arrow,” Blackberry Smoke retook the stage for a three-song encore that included Elton John’s “Burn Down The Mission” before bringing Friday night to a close with “Ain’t Much Left Of Me.”

BBS kicked off night two with their own “Lord Strike Me Dead.” The band would get into cover material about three-quarters of the way through their set with Tom Petty’s “You Got Lucky.” After “Lay It All On Me,” BBS paid tribute to more southern rock legends with Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Whiskey Rock-a-Roller” as well as another southern staple in “Man Of Constant Sorrow.” Blackberry Smoke closed out the set with “I’ll Keep Ramblin’.”

“Flesh And Bone” kicked off the encore followed by the debut of The Rolling Stones’ “Happy.” The Keith Richards-penned tune appears on the Stones legendary 1972 double LP Exile On Main Street and features rare lead vocals from Richards. Blackberry Smoke did the Stones original justice with a three-piece horn section and backup singers for the classic Exile cut. BBS would return to “Ain’t Much Left Of Me” to close out their 2019 Homecoming run. Check out video of “Happy” and more captured by James Croft below:
