Black Pumas & Lucius Cover The Kinks’ ‘Strangers’
Black Pumas teamed up with Lucius‘ Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig for a cover of The Kinks’ “Strangers.” The collaborative track is featured in the trailer for the YouTube Original Life In A Day 2020, with the trailer set to make a broadcast debut on CBS ahead of the Super Bowl on February 7.
The Grammy-nominated Black Pumas recorded “Strangers” specifically for Life In A Day 2020, a documentary featuring crowdsourced footage from people around the world going about their normal day directed by Academy Award-winner Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) and executive produced by Ridley Scott. The Kinks classic also comes just one day after the birthday of the legendary band’s lead guitarist Dave Davies, who wrote and sings lead on the original “Strangers.”
“To me, ‘Strangers’ has a really interesting way of cutting through straight to the soul,” Black Pumas frontman Eric Burton said in a statement. “I had such a good time inhabiting this honest reflection on love lost and the triumph that is a resilient human spirit.”
“I think this is one of the most thoughtful records I have ever done,” Black Pumas guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada added. “We wanted to show the original ‘Strangers’ its due respect. We really tried to honor the song and its timeless lyrics. The Lucius vocals gave the song another dimension, and I only wish we could have recorded with them in person.”
