Watch Black Pumas Dial Up Hypnotic ‘Ice Cream (Pay Phone)’ On ‘Late Night With Seth Meyers’

Black Pumas swung by 30 Rock for an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of Late Night With Seth Meyers. The Austin-based band led by vocalist Eric Burton and guitarist Adrian Quesada performed Chronicles Of A Diamond single “Ice Cream (Pay Phone).”

Chronicles Of A Diamond, the long-awaited follow-up to 2019’s Black Pumas, arrived on October 27, 2023 through ATO Records. The seven-time Grammy-nominated band’s 10-track sophomore full-length record was mainly mixed by Shawn Everett with Quesada producing and Burton co-producing.

Eric Burton wrote the captivating “Ice Cream (Pay Phone).” Burton started work on the song a few years back and it really took form following a late-night session he had with bassist/keyboardist Josh Blue. “When left alone I tend to work in an unorthodox way, where the colors don’t go together quite like you’d expect them to,” explained the vocalist. “With that song the big, distorted guitar doesn’t seem like it should work with how I’m singing, but it sounded so soulful in a way that felt just right to me.”

Adrian Quesada finished “Ice Cream (Pay Phone)” at his own studio. “A lot of Eric’s ideas lately have had a meditative quality, where all these repetitive motifs are happening in the background while the song changes around them,” added Quesada. “As soon as I heard ‘Ice Cream’ I loved it, because it was so radically different from anything we’d done before, or anything I would’ve come up with on my own.”

Black Pumas begin an extensive 2024 Tour tonight at The Fillmore Philadelphia. The band returns to New York City on Friday to play the historic Radio City Music Hall.
