Primus recently opened up drummer auditions following the sudden departure of Tim “Herb” Alexander. Primus bassist Les Claypool shared a humorous audition video from his pal, Billy Strings.
In their call for drummer auditions, Primus wrote:
“Seeking a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world. Flashy chops are wonderful, but groove, pocket, and the ability to listen, react, and contribute to the musical conversation is a must.”
“We may have found our guy…” Claypool captioned his Instagram sharing the Billy audition. Check it out below:

In a statement shared with Rolling Stone, Tim “Herb” Alexander wrote, “Sometimes the passion turns into a job,” continuing, “Over time, I started realizing that it was affecting my physical life, it was affecting my mental life, and it was affecting my family life, and my heart just wasn’t in it.”
Primus has a two-night New Year’s Eve run in Oakland coming up which will see “An augmented version of Primus featuring members of Holy Mackerel and Frog Brigade.” Tool’s Danny Carey will play with Primus at the upcoming Tool Live in the Sand destination event with Primus aiming to have a drummer lined up for next year’s Sessanta 2025 tour with Puscifer and A Perfect Circle.
