Billy Strings Joins Greensky Bluegrass At Red Rocks
Greensky Bluegrass closed out a three-night stand at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on Sunday with help from Billy Strings and members of his band. Strings’ opening set was his Red Rocks debut and Greensky went on to honor the late Jeff Austin and bust out a Phish cover last played in 2013.
The fifth GSBG set of the weekend began a trio of songs from their 2019 album, All For Money — “What You Need,” “Wish I Didn’t Know” and “It’s Not Mine Anymore.” Greensky then performed Phish’s “Rift” for the first time since November 30, 2013, a span of well over 600 shows. Next up was “Bottle Dry,” which was followed by the return of “Lose My Way” after 15 concerts. The pairing of “Jaywalking” and “Run Or Die” brought the frame to a close.
Greensky had a big surprise to kick off their final set of the Red Rocks 2019 Run, as they performed “Casual Wednesday” for the first time on a day other than Wednesday. Dobroist Anders Beck altered the words to “Red Rocks Sunday.” It was then back to All For Money for the title track before Paul Hoffman belted out “In Control.” A few songs later, Strings emerged to add to “I’d Probably Kill You.” Billy stuck around and his band mates, banjoist Billy Failing and mandolinist Jarrod Walker added to an exploratory “Don’t Lie” that featured Strings’ own “Meet Me At The Creek” within.
The quintet returned to the stage for the encore without any guests and gathered around a single mic. Beck dedicated the band’s performance of “No Expectations” by The Rolling Stones to Jeff Austin and asked attendees to “hug your friends.”
