Billy Strings Covers Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne & More In Denver: Full Show Pro-Shot Video

Billy Strings continued his three-night run at Denver’s Ogden Theatre on Saturday night. The guitarist and singer-songwriter treated fans to a number of covers from the Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne, Jimmy Cliff and more.

But Strings would open with a couple of originals beginning with “Taking Water” followed by “Hollow Heart,” two tunes from Billy’s recently released 2019 album Home. Strings got into his first cover of the night, Tony Rice’s “Tipper” before returning to his own “While I’m Waiting Here.” Billy got into the covers in earnest with John Hartford’s “I’m Still Here” which led into “Last Train To Clarksville,” a jaunty tune made popular by The Monkees. Stings then delivered his first of two Ralph Stanley covers of the night, “Nobody’s Love Is Like Mine,” before launching into his own “Dust In A Baggie” — the closest thing to a classic the young picker has — which then headed into “Running.” Fittingly, Strings closed out the first frame with Jackson Browne’s “Running On Empty.”

The second set got underway with Home’s “Away From The Mire” followed by “Long Forgotten Dream.” The second Ralph Stanely number came next in “Ralph’s Banjo Special,” a song Billy introduced as “a real shit kicker,” which explains the discrepancy on Setlist.FM. The second set also contained covers of Jimmy Cliff’s “Sitting In Limbo” and the Grateful Dead’s “China Doll.” Interestingly, “Sitting In Limbo” was a staple in the Jerry Garcia Band for many years. Strings closed out the set with “Meet Me At The Creek” from his debut LP Turmoil & Tinfoil. Billy and company would reemerge for a gorgeous, almost a cappella rendition of Steve Young’s sing-along “Seven Bridges Road” made popular by the Eagles.
