Billy Strings brought his Streaming Strings tour of empty Nashville venues to a close on Sunday night at 3rd & Lindsley. Strings and his band were joined by Greensky Bluegrass dobroist Anders Beck for the backend of their second set last night.
The concert began with Billy and his band — consisting of mandolin player Jarrod Walker, banjoist Billy Failing and bassist Royal Masat — honoring John Prine by debuting a cover of “Sweet Revenge.” Prine originally released “Sweet Revenge” as the title track of his third studio album in 1973. A quick romp through “Slow Train” followed before the quartet jammed on the traditional “Shady Grove.”

Next, the four-piece worked The Dillards’ “Ernest T. Grass” into “How Mountain Girls Can Love” by The Stanley Brothers. More covers followed as takes on the traditional “Red Rocking Chain” and Bill Monroe’s “Southern Flavor” gave way to Strings’ rendition of the Pearl Jam classic “In Hiding.” The set ended with a cover of The Seldom Scene’s “Old Train” and “Turmoil & Tinfoil,” the title track of Strings’ debut studio album, which the band played in full on Friday.
The final set of the Streaming Strings tour started with covers of New Grass Revival’s “Whisper My Name,” Marty Stuart’s “Old Mexico” and “All Fall Down” by John Hartford. Strings then led his mates on New Riders Of The Purple Sage’s “Lonesome L.A. Cowboy.” From there, Anders Beck emerged and augmented the quartet on the last four songs of the frame. Up first was “Pyramid Country,” which the band jammed into the traditional “Little Maggie.” Beck was also on hand for a cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “The Ballad Of Curtis Loew” and the “Meet Me At The Creek” set closer. Strings, Failing, Walker and Masat ended the evening and tour with an encore of Bill Monroe’s “Y’all Come.”
