Watch Billy Joel Pay Tribute To Gordon Lightfoot At Madison Square Garden
A portion of “Sundown” was played in honor of the renowned Canadian folk musician.

Billy Joel’s monthly residency at Madison Square Garden continued on Friday with a show featuring a tribute to Canadian folk musician Gordon Lightfoot, who died last week at age 84. Joel performed part of one of Lightfoot’s most well-known songs and spoke about the renowned singer-songwriter.
“I want to say thank you and rest in peace to the great Gordon Lightfoot,” Joel told the MSG audience after playing a portion of Lightfoot’s “Sundown.” Joel then dedicated a performance of “The Downeaster Alexa” to Lightfoot.
Shortly after Lightfoot’s death on May 1, Joel posted a video clip on social media calling Lightfoot a “lifelong musical hero” and playing the latter’s “If You Could Read My Mind.”
Joel’s monthly MSG residency continues with its 91st performance on June 2. Watch his tributes to Gordon Lightfoot below:
