A new documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, is set to premiere on HBO and stream on Max this summer. The two-part doc “is an expansive portrait of the life and music of Billy Joel, exploring the love, loss, and personal struggles that fuel his songwriting,” as per press materials.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes is named after the closer on Billy Joel‘s 1989 album Storm Front. At the 2024 Grammys, Joel was asked what his favorite song was and he replied “And So It Goes.” The aptly name documentary follows the legendary pianist and singer-songwriter’s storied career through “never-before-seen performances, home movies, and personal photographs.” The film also presents “in-depth one-on-one interviews.”

Susan Lacy (Spielberg) and Jessica Levin (The Janes) directed Billy Joel: And So It Goes. The Emmy-winning filmmakers also worked together on HBO’s Jane Fonda in Five Acts.

“For those who think they know Joel’s story, as well as those who are not as familiar, I believe this two-part film is both a revelation and a surprise,” Susan Lacy stated. “I was drawn to his story as someone who knew little at the outset, and was astounded at how autobiographical his songs are and how complex his story is. We are gratified that Bill trusted us with his story, which we have told as honestly as possible, diving into territory which has not been explored before.”
