Beck closed out the main stage action with a guest-filled set on Tuesday at the penultimate day of Newport Folk Festival’s Folk On event. The first Beck festival appearance since 2019 included cameos from Sharon Van Etten, Jack Antonoff‘s Bleachers, guitarist Smokey Hormel and drummer/comedian Fred Armisen.

Yesterday’s Beck set took place on the Lawn Stage at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island. The Los Angeles-based artist went solo for most of the 15-song, 75-minute acoustic performance.

Beck opened by pairing “Pay No Mind (Snoozer)” and “Nitemare Hippy Girl” from his breakthrough 1994 studio album, Mellow Gold. Tuesday marked his first performance of the latter since September 23, 2015 as per Setlist.FM. Next up were covers of Chris Bell’s “I Am The Cosmos” and Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.”

Longtime Beck collaborator Smokey Hormel was the first guest of the set as he emerged for Sea Change gem “Guess I’m Doing Fine.” Then, Sharon Van Etten added to “Asshole” off 1994’s One Foot In The Grave. Later, Antonoff and Bleachers joined Beck and Smokey for a cover of The Corgi’s “Everybody’s Got To Learn Sometime.” Beck recorded the song for the soundtrack to Michael Gondry’s 2004 film, Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.

Hormel stuck around for “Lost Cause” and then Fred Armisen came out sitting at a drum set that was rolled on stage. Armisen told Beck he was soundchecking for a set at 1 a.m. “This is the time for my soundcheck. This is the time I’m supposed to be checking my drums,” the SNL alum quipped as he continued to test out his drums bringing “Lost Cause” to an early conclusion. “I’m very sorry, just do your set and ignore me,” Armisen added. Beck eventually gave up and teamed with Fred and Smokey for “something a little sexy,” as they performed the classic “Debra.” Beck noted Fred’s playing was “pretty sweet” and “loosened him up” before the “Loser” finale.
