Hiss Golden Messenger (M.C. Taylor) brought out members of Dawes, Aoife O’Donovan, Erin Rae and Birds of Chicago during his set Monday at Newport Folk Festival’s Folk On event. The collaborations came during Taylor’s solo performance at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, Rhode Island.
First to emerge was Rae, Taylor’s frequent collaborator who herself led a guest-filled Folk On set, to augment a performance of “I Need A Teacher.” Dawes members Taylor Goldsmith and Griffin Goldsmith, who were on site to perform with Middle Brother, were next to sit-in with Hiss, adding vocals to “Sanctuary.”
Rae came back later in the set to join Taylor on “Southern Grammar” and “When the Wall Comes Down.” O’Donovan, who performed the set before Hiss Golden Messenger that saw Taylor sit-in, returned the favor by coming out for a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Bertha.”
Birds of Chicago, the duo of JT Nero and Allison Russell (the latter of which curated Sunday’s final set that saw a surprise appearance by Chaka Khan) were brought out along with Rae and O’Donovan to help close out Hiss Golden Messenger’s set-closing offering of “Everybody Needs Somebody.”
Newport Folk Festival’s Folk On event continues today and tomorrow. Watch Erin Rae join Hiss Golden Messenger on “I Need A Teacher” at the Newport Folk Festival below:
