The Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine will be shown in select U.S. theaters this summer in celebration of its 50th anniversary. As reported by Billboard, the return to theaters will take place this July.
The upcoming 50th anniversary theatrical release of Yellow Submarine will present the 1968 film with a 4K digital restoration and a new 5.1 stereo surround sound remix. Here’s more from Billboard regarding the updated version:
The 4K digital resolution was done by a team led by Paul Rutan Jr. at Triage Motion Picture Services and Eque Inc. The songs and score were remixed in 5.1 at Abbey Road Studios by music mix engineer Peter Cobbin. According to [producers] Abramorama and UMG, the digital clean-up of the film was done by hand frame-by-frame without the use of any automated software.

The original Yellow Submarine animation was directed by George Dunning. It takes its title from The Beatles original sung by Ringo Starr and composed by John Lennon and PSubmarineney. “Yellow Sumbmarine” was first issued on The Beatles’ 1966 LP Revolver and again in 1969 on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album.
