There aren’t many worse feelings than going for your wallet and realizing you misplaced it. That exact scenario happened to Reilly Flaherty who realized he lost his wallet at a recent Wilco concert at Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre. As per USA Today, Flaherty received what the paper dubbed “the most New York note imaginable” two weeks later that accompanied some of the contents of his wallet.

Flaherty had made it back to his home in the Lower East Side of Manhattan by the time he realized his wallet was missing. He went all the way back to the venue and came home again empty handed. That’s where the story ended until he received a package with this note:

Dear Reilly Flaherty,

I found your wallet and your drivers license and your address so here’s your credit cards and other important stuff. I kept the cash because I needed weed, the metrocard because well the fare’s $2.75 now, and the wallet cause it’s kinda cool. enjoy the rest of your day. Toodles, Anonymous

“I’ve never been so conflicted about a nice gesture,” Flaherty told the USA Today. As mentioned in the letter, the wallet itself was gone as well as the cash and even a $10 gift card and shoeshine loyalty card. “I had already gone to get a new license, and had already gotten all my cards replaced, so basically it was useless to me,” Reilly added to the USA Today. What would Flaherty say if he met the anonymous bad samaritan? “I would say, ‘Man, we would’ve gotten along — we’re both into Wilco — but you turned out to be super selfish.’ It speaks to the New York mentality: I’m going to be nice but there’s going to be an asterisk,” the Wilco fan said to the New York Post.

After the story went viral, Wilco responded:
