The Avett Brothers‘ music and lyrics is featured in Swept Away, a new musical which premieres at the Berkeley Rep’s Peet’s Theatre in Berkeley, California on January 9, 2022 with the initial run ending on February 13, 2022. Video featuring a performance of The Avett Brothers’ “Murder In The City” by cast members Stark Sands and Adrian Blake Enscoe was recently released to preview Swept Away.

The “Murder In The City” performance was filmed live at Banzarbar in New York City. A description of the musical reads, “1888, off the coast of New Bedford, MA. When a violent storm sinks their whaling ship, the four surviving souls—a young man in search of adventure, his older brother who has sworn to protect him, a captain at the end of a long career at sea, and a worldly first mate who has fallen from grace—each face a reckoning: How far will I go to stay alive? And can I live with the consequences?”

Swept Away was originally scheduled to debut in June 2020 before the pandemic led to multiple delays. Tony-winning stage and screenwriter John Logan wrote the book for the musical with Michael Mayer set to direct. Other cast members include John Gallagher, Jr. and Wayne Duvall.

Scott and Seth Avett penned “Murder In The City” for inclusion on The Avett Brothers’ 2008 EP, The Second Gleam. See Sands and Enscoe of the Swept Away cast perform the song below:
