Watch Arcade Fire & Neil Young Collaborate At Bridge School Benefit Concerts

Neil Young and Arcade Fire both have new releases on the horizon. Young is set to put out his archival box set Official Release Series Volume 4 (ORS Vol 4) on April 29 ​​via Reprise Records. Arcade Fire will issue a new album, WE (their first suido album in nearly five years), on May 6 through Columbia and recently unveiled material from the album at a Ukraine benefit in New Orleans.

In honor of the fellow Canadian artists’ output, JamBase takes a look at collaborations between the two at Young’s Bridge School Benefit concerts in 2011 and 2013 at the Bay Area’s Shoreline Amphitheatre.

Arcade Fire (whose co-founder Will Butler announced his departure from the band yesterday) appeared on the Bridge School Benefit concert lineup in 2011. On October 22, Neil joined the band on acoustic guitar and harmonica for the second to last song of their set, his own “Helpless.” Young and Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler traded verses for a spot-on rendition the CSNY Déjà Vu classic. Neil would reprise his guest spot the following night.

Young welcomed Arcade Fire back to the Bridge School Benefit concert 2013. On October 26, the collaborators performed a song Win Butler wrote after having a dream, or a “night terror,” as he describes it ahead of the performance, where the band is sound checking in front of an audience and people begin to leave. Butler thought the tune sounded “basically like a Neil Young song” and welcomed the legendary singer-songwriter to play guitar, harmonica and help him sing it. “This song is by Neil Young in my head,” Win said as Neil took the stage.
