Andrew Bird announced a new album, Inside Problems, due out via Loma Vista Recordings on June 3. The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist also shared the single, “Underlands.”
Inside Problems is Bird’s first solo LP of all-original music since his Grammy-nominated 2019 album My Finest Work Yet. Bird and his four-piece band captured the new record mostly live with minimal overdubs, notably a guest vocal spot from singer-songwriter Madison Cunningham. Andrew enlisted renowned producer and musician Mike Viola to helm the album. Bird previously shared the Inside Problems track “Atomized” and now follows with “Underlands.”

As both the titles of the singles and the album suggest, Inside Problems is an examination of unseen things and the liminal spaces that veil them. Bird shared his thoughts on the record and second single:
You just don’t know what’s under the surface, be it the land, the sea, our skin. You could be whistling away, projecting contentedness, when really there’s a swirling twisted mess underneath. Looking up, there’s the knowable universe but unless you get into astrology, you’ll find the stars don’t owe us anything and you’re left less assured than when we thought gods threw down lightning bolts. ‘Underlands’ introduces an album that deals with the unseen underneath and the membrane that separates your outside problems from your inside problems.
“Underlands” arrived with a visual helmed by Matthew Daniel Siskin. Watch it below along with a trailer for the album:
