Lesh turned to Terrapin Family Band guitarist Ross James and Go By Ocean axeman Craig MacArthur to fill out the lineup in the second set. The evening’s “special guest” was once again multi-instrumentalist Jackie Greene. Drummer Joe Russo and keyboardist Adam MacDougall were the other members of Phil’s ensemble on Thursday night. In addition, Terrapin Family Band drummer Alex Koford guested on percussion for the majority of the second set.
Thursday’s show started off with Anders on stage. Osborne sang lead on both a cover of Bob Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff” and his own “Burning On The Inside” during the opening stanza. After Osborne was unable to come out for the second set, the band changed the pre-planned setlist a bit. Greene handled vocals for a cover of “Midnight Rambler” that kicked off set two. MacArthur lent a hand for the first four songs of the second set and shared vocals on “The Wheel” with Jackie. Then, Ross James came out for the remainder of the closing stanza, which was one big “Help”/”Slip”/”Franklin’s” sequence with a few tunes in the middle. Lesh led a rousing rendition of “Box Of Rain” in the encore slot.
We hope Anders is feeling better and returns to the stage tonight for the third of four performances on Phil Lesh’s birthday run. Check out our list of other instances where a band played “one man down.”
