ALO & Jack Johnson Are ‘Better Together’ In Santa Barbara

ALO resumed their long-standing musical partnership with Jack Johnson on Valentine’s Day in Santa Barbara. Johnson came out for the second half of the quartet’s annual Tour d’Amour stop at SOhO Restaurant and Music Club.
Santa Barbara holds a special place in ALO history, as the band was formed in the area. The quartet — currently consisting of Lebo (Dan Lebowitz), Zach Gill, Steve Adams and Ezra Lipp — returned to the coastal city on Saturday night for the second stop of their Tour d’Amour XIX.
Jack Johnson emerged to a hero’s welcome following the first four songs of the evening and a glowing introduction from the keyboardist in his touring band and ALO co-founding member Zach Gill. The five musicians started the lengthy collaboration with “Girl, I Wanna Lay You Down.” Johnson recorded the song with the quartet for a version released on their 2005 album, Fly Between Falls.
The Hawaiian singer-songwriter stayed out for a medley combining portions of Sublime’s “Badfish,” Jack Johnson original “Mudfootball” and the Crickets’ “Not Fade Away.” Johnson completed his stay by helping ALO close out their first set with a take on his 2005 hit “Better Together.”
Madeline Hawthorne opened the concert and then led ALO through a cover of Fleetwood’s “You Make Loving Fun” during their second set. The closing stanza was heavy on fan favorites, including “I Love Music,” “BBQ” and “Lady Loop.” ALO punctuated the night with a “Divine Fall” encore.
