Electropop trio AJR took to 30 Rock in their native New York City for a performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The group rolled through “The Big Goodbye” off their 2025 EP, What No One’s Thinking.

Released on September 5, 2025, What No One’s Thinking is AJR’s first EP since releasing 2016’s What Everyone Is Thinking. It also follows the trio’s 2023 full-length album, The Maybe Man.

“The Big Goodbye” closes out the five-song What No One’s Thinking. The song opens with an interesting sample of The Fortunairs Barbershop Quartet singing the fittingly titled “The Auctioneer.”

“We were sitting on this sample for like five years, ‘The Auctioneer’ sample,” AJR’s Jack Met said in an ABC Audio interview. “And we didn’t really know how to make a song out of it. We tried to make this kind of happy party song. We made this, like, really weird song with a weird concept.”

Met continued on the song’s theme:

“The best day of your life is you going off and living your dream, and then the mixed feelings about leaving your friends and family behind. And they’re gonna kind of go off and do their own thing together, and go get married, while you’re sort of off alone, achieving your dream. There’s sort of that complexity there. So that was the mindset behind ‘The Big Goodbye.'”
