“It seems they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter?”

Aimee Mann posted on Instagram challenging her removal from Steely Dan’s upcoming summer tour dates. Mann questioned the motive behind the decision to no longer have her open for the band at concerts slated for June and July.

Steve Winwood was originally tapped to open for Steely Dan’s Earth After Hours Summer Tour, but bowed out due to health reasons. Mann and Snarky Puppy were announced as replacements, with the latter still set to open the first leg of the tour from May 20 through June 19.

Mann’s response to being removed from Steely Dan’s tour came in the form of a graphic she drew and shared on Instagram. Across the four panels, Mann captioned the illustrations by writing:

“I was supposed to open for Steely Dan this summer. I just found out that they took me off the bill. No one is entirely sure why, but it seems they thought their audience wouldn’t like a female singer-songwriter? As it happens, Steely Dan is the one band that I 100% love, with no reservations, so it really sucks. But you know what? People are allowed to not like you, for whatever reason.”

Steely Dan’s 23-city Earth After Hours Summer Tour starts on May 20 and continues through July 3. A replacement for Mann has not been named.
