13-Year-Old Pianist Owen York Pays Tribute To Walter Becker With Steely Dan Medley

By Scott Bernstein Sep 12, 2017 8:00 am PDT

13-year-old pianist Owen York is a big Steely Dan fan who combined 26 of the band’s songs into one seamless medley earlier this year. York, like many music fans, was saddened by the recent passing of Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker. The talented youngster decided to honor Walter by prepping a medley of two of Becker’s signature songs.

Owen York’s three-and-a-half minute medley combines portions of “Josie,” the original of which features an iconic Walter solo, and “Hey Nineteen,” a song Becker would use as an opportunity to chat with the crowd at Steely Dan concerts. York has been playing Walter’s music since he was eight-years-old and saw Steely Dan perform twice.

Owen is a member of the Rockland Youth Jazz Ensemble, consisting of elite musicians from New York and New Jersey. Keep your eyes on York’s YouTube channel for future medleys.
