HBO premiered the first installment of Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways, a series that documents the making of the band’s new album of the same name, on Friday night. The first episode focuses on the city of Chicago and its rich musical history. After the episode aired Dave Grohl and Co. took the stage at the tiny Cubby Bear in The Windy City, a venue that holds special significance to Grohl as he attended his first concert at the Wrigleyville bar.

Grohl’s first show featured Chicago punk act Naked Raygun and Dave welcomed the group’s lead singer Jeff Pezzati to help out on a cover of Naked Raygun’s “Surf Combat,” which Grohl said was the first punk rock single he ever bought. The evening’s other guest was Cheap Trick guitarist Rick Nielsen, who lent his talents to the first single from Sonic Highways, “Something From Nothing,” which is featured in the first episode of Sonic Highways. Nielsen helped out on a live version of “Something From Nothing” as well as Cheap Trick covers “Surrender” and “Stiff Competition” on Friday night.
